The VBAC I Had to Demand

My first pregnancy(2022) was conceived with some difficulty. I was consulting with my friend and had to change to another doc in the third trimester. She was a family doctor for a couple decades, and I assumed she had the best of my interests in mind. I had told her I was looking at a vaginal birth, and failed to pick up a few red flags at her clinic. She had me delivered at a corporate maternity hospital, and forced me into an unnecessary c section. I was not prepared for such a birthing, and I took months to cope with my reality. I did not even get a chance to get into labour, and I constantly believed I was snatched away from my chance at experiencing the pain and pleasure of birthing.

I planned my second kid after 2yrs as I had heard 2.5yr+ gap could provide a possibility of a vbac. Based on a friends recommendation, I consulted with Dr Merlin from Blooms centre, who is a vbac specialist. I was in tears that day. Unable to believe that such good medical care is available. Natural birthing but with emergency facilities. Why was I not lucky to find this place the first time around?

"Not all doctors wish for your best. They have a management to answer to."

With a lot of mental and emotional baggage, I prepared for a vbac with her and the physiotherapist/doula. Of course, nutrition and exercise were on point. All biomarkers checked regularly. I had a wonderful pregnancy and by the 38-39 week I was cleared for a water birthing as well.

I went into labour naturally and delivered within 7 hours. It was the most beautiful and empowering experience I have had. With a team of 10+ people in the room to help navigate any challenges, I felt safe and happy. Happy to share a lot more details on call/ video etc.
